It’s okay to step away

If there’s a thing as being too vulnerable, then this podcast update might be it. If you’re following on Instagram you would know a bit more about the origin of this recording. This is really an internal dialogue – possibly quite close to your own. This is for the people who know when they’ve reached their limit but still keep going. For the people who take the time to outline all the reasons they can’t take a break.

Choosing not to take a break is a vicious cycle:

  1. You can’t take a break because you have too much work to do
  2. So you push past your boundaries and hard stops and keep going
  3. Then, we get to a point where you’re pretty stressed
  4. Because you’re stressed, and have no time for anything else you’ve neglected relationships
  5. Now, you’re feeling isolated (to add to the stress)
  6. You’re not sleeping well
  7. So you’re on edge most of the time and generally not in a great mood
  8. You try to relax but nothing feels restful
  9. So you turn to work to fill all the gaps in your stressful isolation
  10. Rinse and repeat

What I’ve realized after more than a decade in the world of work, is that there will always be work. Surprise surprise! And even if one job bites the dust, you can get another. What you cannot get another of is you. This podcast update is a reminder about the urgency of taking a break and the importance of relationships that feel like rest. When was the last time you felt like yourself?
