Debrief your week

At the end of each week do you take a moment to review your activities?

Well you should. Doing a review of the past week helps you to process the week’s activities, and let go of any negative energy before heading into the weekend. In the same way that we write reports for work and look up the stats on things we want to buy, why not mirror this attention to analytics in our own lives? Decide how you will measure the success of each week to ensure that there is some kind of “standardized” measure across all the weeks.

It might be advisable to use likert scales, so for example: scales of 1-10 or scales of smiley faces to describe some aspects of your week (choose 4 or 5 markers/indicators of success), and then possibly a list of questions that you would answer at the end of each week.

Professionals (in high stress environments) debrief after a stressful or highly emotional situation. Arguably, we could probably identify our weeks as highly emotional and stressful, all the more reason to debrief.

So it might look a little something like this:

OPENING QUESTION: Was this a successful week? Why or why not?

ON A SCALE OF 1 – 10, HOW WOULD YOU MEASURE_______ THIS WEEK:

  • Productivity
  • Contentment
  • Focus
  • Stress levels
  • Taking sufficient breaks

CLOSING QUESTIONS:

  • What worked well this week>
  • What could be improved?
  • What did I accomplish this week? Anything note-worthy?
  • What didn’t I accomplish?
  • In which TWO ways can I improve the next week
