The US$100 challenge

Please note that the US$100 is merely a suggestion (and seemed like a nice, rounded number). Depending on inflation, the conversion rates in your country, and your unique life situation this value may differ.

I’ve only ever done two things with money: save it and spend it. Or more accurately: save it to spend it.

As a Millennial getting to the older end of the spectrum, I see where I need to really get a handle on who I want to be in the next few years. For some time I have been wanting to connect how I spend my money to the person I want to be.

For a long time the only way I could show independence was through my purchases, When we went on family vacations, I could shop for my own outfits  – which my parents had to approve but it still gave me a sense of individuality and asserting independence. That was great for me as a child … but it has grown with me.

Episode 3: Take the $100 Challenge

I would stop by the mall in between breaks or after classes while in University just to look at what was on display (and eventually leave with a few items).

Now that I moved out of my family home I don’t need to hold on to that kind of warped idea of independence anymore, but it’s a hard habit to break. I have zeroed in on it and have been doing pretty deep dives into minimalism and consciously deciding to live with less.

So, I’ve decided to embark on a challenge to spend only US $100 for a month. Now, this $100 limit doesn’t include essentials like living, transportation and food costs, it’s the money you spend on yourself – that 15% fun money we spoke about in this article.

The challenge is just a fun way of evaluating what you spend your coins on every month – the things you convince yourself are necessary, now you’ll get a chance to see if you can actually survive without them.
