I can’t go any further into this blog post without saying that you can never (well, almost never) go wrong when you bet on yourself. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get into it.
You are the main character
You are the only constant in any of your relationships, situation-ships, hardships…you are the main character of the story. So, the chances you allow yourself affect the rest of your story. What do you want your story to look like?

In the same way that you can be confident but then you can also become over-confident, you need to know when to call, raise and fold on those bets.
- Call: is the mechanism used to call a bet. This is essentially matching the amount that has been put in.
- Raise: is the action one takes when they want to increase the opening bet.
- Fold: is the act of ending participation in a hand.

Everyone wasn’t meant to be an entrepreneur
While we understand that not everyone is meant to be an entrepreneur, we want to make our mark on this planet. We deserve to share our talents with the world. Sometime, though, as we’re thinking about our talents, ideas and the magic we want to share we run into some problems because we are trying to adapt other people’s ideas of what our legacy should be. And trying to live up to that thing that is not something you’ve decided is the talent, gift, or magic you want to share with the world. So you’ve taken someone else’s dream and made it your own and, as if that’s not bad enough, you’re also using their ideals to measure the success of this thing that you’ll realize you really don’t care about if you took a moment to think about it.
Think it over, really think it over
Take some time to think about the things you’ve decided are your talents. Are those talents things that you decided you were good at or are those the things your parents, friends, and even your boss have told you you’re good at? Or better yet, have you decided on these “talents” because you think this is what you need to focus on to be successful?
STEP #1: Inventory
Take stock of your talents. Identify which you believe you are already good and which you need a bit more training to master
You know the things you are passionate about, the things you’ve been dreaming about. But for some reason you’re afraid of saying you want them (even just saying this to yourself) It is okay to want nice things, to want better, to want ease, to want luxury – whatever that looks like for you.
STEP #2: Assess
Now that you have your inventory of skills and talents, it’s time to take a moment to assess which ones you will focus your energies on (or bet on). This may look like: carving out time to write down your goals, or take a class to hone your skills, or taking the leap to start that side hustle. The talent, idea or whatever magic you want to share with the world will never see the light of day, unless you bet on yourself.
Now, the next bit is a little tricky because you want to bet on yourself and you have to bet on yourself but you also want to endure you’re making the right wager. You have to make a good bet, to win big. So, you’ll need to some up with some form on method of analysis or units of measurement to continuously analyze which talents to continue honing and which to push pause on. Sometimes we have to know when to give an idea space to breathe, and then revisit it after a while.
STEP #3: Measure
The good news is, you’re already good at measuring. You’ve been looking at how you measure up to folks your whole life. But this time you get to create the indicators and tools of measurement that work for you, and that work for the talents you’ve shortlisted. Decide what success looks like for you. Be realistic with this. We can very easily get out of hand with our expectations of success, especially because it’s so easy to see other people’s achievements online. Go at your own pace. Remember your only competition is you.
The takeaway
At the end of the day, we are the ones who decide how we want our lives to look. We have the capacity to enjoy our current achievements and also to work towards more. You were made for more. No matter how fast or slow you go, progress is progress and evolution is eternal. You are always growing and becoming better. Check out this podcast episode on how to thrive wherever you are:
